Caramel-Like Dip

What better time than Fall to enjoy apples and "caramel" dip?!

8oz softened cream cheese
1/2 cup (dark) brown sugar -- dark just helps the coloring, I think
1/2 tsp vanilla

Mix and enjoy!

Eye Contact with Toddlers

I don't really think we have faced this issue with our son yet, but I read this article today and thought it was a good, short one to share. I got it from the BabyCenter weekly emails. (www.babycenter.com)

How can I encourage my toddler to look people in the eye when speaking to them?

My toddler doesn't look people in the eye when speaking to them. Can we work with him on this issue at this age?

Expert Answers

Patricia Henderson Shimm, parent educator and author

Before the age of 3, most toddlers don't yet grasp the importance of looking people in the eye when speaking to them. In fact, looking down or away is how they attempt to take control of a situation. When you're explaining to your child that he shouldn't jump on the bed, for example, he may look at a wall to avoid becoming overwhelmed with feelings of guilt. Or if it's his birthday and he's receiving presents, your child may not be able to look at Grandpa because he's too excited. One way to draw your child out is to use a puppet to talk to him. Get his attention by placing the puppet within his line of vision. Use it to help him focus on you, then drop the puppet and catch his gaze.

When your toddler seems receptive to learning new social skills — usually sometime after his third birthday — you'll be able to explain to him why he should look a person in the eye during conversations. Tell him, "It's the polite thing to do. It lets the other person know that you're listening. See how I look at you when you're telling me something?" Remind him from time to time and reward him with praise when he remembers. Gradually he'll learn that when he treats other people respectfully, he's treated with respect himself.

Free Sling!

Dear J (and friends),

We have a brand new mommy gear product line that we have been working on for over a year now and are finally launching today! To celebrate, we wanted to give you a promo code for a free baby pouch sling (a $39.00 value!) from our new website www.sevenslings.com ! We have been pondering about how to “kick-off” the site and decided why not first give a special offer to our preferred UdderCovers.com customers that have purchased more than once from us as a sincere thank you for making this new product line possible!

This promotion will allow you only one purchase so please take your time to get the right size and pattern for you! Once you have used the promo code, it will delete from our promo code database and can no longer be used –so don’t tell anyone about it, otherwise your friend may use it before you do! The promo code is your full email address that we sent this offer to. This offer will expire on the 31st of this month so don’t delay!

Go to www.sevenslings.com , click on “Shop Now”, and select the correct size sling or gift set you would like (be sure to visit our sizing page for instructions on how to select the right size sling for you). Once you have selected the sling or gift set you would like, enter your full email address into the promo code box and click “Apply Code”. This will bring your product total from $39.00 to $0 for one of our pouch slings or from $44.00 to only $5 for our gift sets - all you are required to pay is the shipping & processing!

These fitted slings are safe for infants to toddlers 35 lbs and under.

Again, the Seven™ Slings website is our newest addition and we would greatly appreciate any helpful feedback about your experience on the website and how we can improve it!

Sincerely,
Jenny Pierce
Owner
UdderCovers.Com

*You may have heard about the Infantino™ “bag sling” recall. The recalled Infantino™ slings are not the same type of baby sling found at sevenslings.com. The recalled slings were “bag slings” and were similar to an elastic closure purse where the baby sits closer to your thighs than your chest. Our slings are fitted, non-adjustable “pouch slings” and hold your baby right up close to you on your chest where you can see and kiss your child. There has not been a recall associated with “pouch style slings”.

Avocado Smoothie

I came across this recipe in the September issue of Disney's Family Fun magazine today. It sounds like a great boost for a cranky tot on long or hectic day because "it's a good source of vitamins, fiber, potassium, and good-for-you fats."

In a blender, combine a peeled and pitted avocado with 1 cup each milk and ice cubes, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. Blend until smooth. Makes 3 servings.

Daily deals on kids items

We've had several Groupon and Living Social one day deals posted here recently, so I thought you mommas might be interested in similar sites with a focus on kids items. I recently found Zulily (run by some of the same folks who made the Blue Nile site successful) and Totsy. Both are "members only private sale" sites that advertise special deals anywhere from 30% - 70% off. I haven't been on them all that much, but what I have seen is impressive. You can't really see any of the deals without signing up but right now, for example, Totsy has a selection of shoes by 'Little Soles' on sale for $12.99, down from the retail price of $38. On Zulily, SIGG BPA-free aluminum bottles are running for just around half-off.

If you love daily deals sites, you may also want to cruise over to the Kids Woot site to see what they've posted for the day.

Fort Worth Blog

A Smart Idea in the Texas Heat

My car book says to roll down the windows to let out all the hot air before turning on A/C.
WHY ???????????
Car Air-conditioning -

No wonder more folks are dying from cancer than ever before.  We wonder where this stuff comes from but here is an example that explains a lot of the cancer causing incidents.
Many people are in their cars first thing in the morning and the last thing at night, 7 days a week.
As I read this, it makes me feel guilty and ill.  Please pass this on to as many people as possible.  Guess its not too late to make some changes.
Car A/C (Air Conditioning) MUST READ!!!
Please do NOT turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car.

Open the windows after you enter your car and then turn ON the AC after a couple of minutes.
Here's why:   According to research, the car dashboard, seats, air freshener emit Benzene, a Cancer causing toxin (carcinogen - take time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car).
In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure will cause Leukemia, increasing the risk of cancer. Can also cause miscarriage.
Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50mg per sq.ft.  A car parked indoors with windows closed will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene.
If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg,  40 times the acceptable level.
People who get into the car, keeping windows closed will inevitably inhale, in quick succession, excessive amounts of the toxin.
Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidney and liver.. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.
So friends, please open the windows and door of your car - give time for interior to air out -dispel the deadly stuff - before you enter.
Thought: 'When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others.'
This is what
snopes.com  says.  It is not the air conditioning in the car but the Benzene producing agents that cause cancer.

CVS -- $10 for buying Pampers

Although I haven't seen the weekly circular, I was told today that this week at CVS, you can earn a $10 register reward for buying a box of Pampers. The deal ends Saturday, July 31st. Remember, you can also use coupons. So, apparently if you use a $2 off coupon and buy the box, then it's like you paid $9.99 (or close) for the 92 (I think) diapers because you got the RR's. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

(If you're unfamiliar with register rewards, then here's a quick summary. It's CVS's instant in-store cash back program. On the end of your receipt a coupon prints for the amount of the reward. That coupon can be used in any later transaction. Yes, even on that same day during that same visit.)

Ann Taylor and LOFT - 40% off sales

Ann Taylor has an additional 40% off already reduced items in stores and online.

Ann Taylor LOFT, which has more casual wear and maternity (though maternity is online only), is offering an additional 40% off your entire purchase.

Each has sale details on their website. From my own experience, these sales can last from a week to just two or so days. And, according to what the sales associates have told me in the past, they never know from one day to the next if the sale is going to continue.

I've hit several of the 'additional 40% off' sales at LOFT this summer and have come away with some GREAT finds! Happy Shopping!

Crib Recall

Delta has recalled several of their cribs:

http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20100624-706375.html

http://cribsafety.jpma.org/node/37

We have a crib made by Delta, the company makes cribs for several different companies (ours is a Pottery Barn brand crib) that is part of the recall. They are suggesting that if you have a crib that has been recalled that your child not sleep in it until you order/receive a part to add to the crib to make it more safe. Parts can be ordered on the above website.

Check the website to see if your crib is part of the recall…it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Love

In H. Norman Wright's Quiet Times for Couples (a daily devotional), June begins with:

There is a substitute for criticism. It's called love. Love heals. Love protects. Love builds up. And more change occurs with love than with criticism.

As a wife and "momma", I'm encouraged to apply this today...and this month.

Water Safety - If you can't see them, you can't save them

My mom sent me the link to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) "See and Save" initiative web page. It has good water safety tips as well as warnings about the dangers of leaving children unattended in hot cars. While we all try to be vigilant about keeping our children safe around water and in the hot summer heat, it is good to occasionally be reminded of basic safety practices.

Stuff to do this weekend

Two of our DFW area cities are hosting festivals this weekend - Grapevine and Addison.

The Main Street Outdoor Adventure kicks off in Grapevine on Friday and runs through Sunday. If you get there before 5pm on Friday, admission is free! After that, admission runs about $7 for adults, $5 for kids, and kids under age 6 are free.

On the other side of the Metroplex, Taste Addison starts at 6pm on Friday. Admission is $5 before 5pm and jumps to $15 after that ( I guess the cheaper admission applies to Saturday and Sunday only), and kids under 3 are free. You can buy $10 'anytime tickets' at area Albertson's stores.

I've been to both of these festivals, albeit before kiddos, and what I loved was how 'walkable' and open they are. Downtown Grapevine is just a fun place to go and Taste Addison offers a variety of food and music all in a cute outdoor park area. If you go, let us know how it is for the stroller-set!

One note, though, about travel to both festivals. There is major construction going on in Grapevine around the 114/121/635 interchange areas -- especially nights and weekends. Be sure to check the DFW Connector site for construction delays and lane closures so you can plan your route (or alternate routes) carefully!

The sale is being held at the Friends’ Book Store’s Chapter 2 annex, 5318 Trail Lake Drive, three doors north of the book store in Wedgwood Village Shopping Center.

Easter Egg ideas

I admit, sometimes I read my magazines a little late. So, sorry for the "late" post here, but maybe you will remember it for years to come? In the April 2010 edition of Disney's "Family Fun" there are a few creative or different ideas for Easter eggs.

My favorite was this one:

Instead of filling plastic eggs with candy or money, this mom buys a 20-25 piece puzzle and puts pieces of the puzzle in each egg. Then, after the kids hunt all the eggs, they have a 2nd activity to keep them busy (and to do together).

Another helpful hint was this one:

When dying eggs, they tend to fall off the spoon or the wire tool and make a mess. This mom has learned that eggs will fit nicely inside of wire whisks, which can be used as the "dye dipping" tool. She says her youngest child (who in the picture appeared to be 2 years old at the most) was even able to a trusted egg colorer.

Thoughts on summer cooking

Last night I was searching the web for new recipes that might engage my little one in eating, oh, some veggies for a change, and stumbled across Babble's list of the 50 Best Mom Food Bloggers. I haven't had a chance to check out many of them, but I do feel like there is a possibility that I can try some of these recipes and tips in my own home.

I've been thinking about the summer and what a bounty of fresh food options it brings and have decided to make it a priority to cook fresh, healthy meals. Will it be easy? Probably not. But I know it will be worth it. To that end, I'm going to try to take advantage of the farmers markets and 'pick your own' farms in the area. Navigate to the Texas Farmers Market Association or to Local Harvest to find information about local farmers markets. You can find information on 'pick your own' farms on the Pick Texas site.

Thank you note worthy Brunch Casserole

At one of my bridal showers a friend gave me a 3 ring binder filled with their tried and true recipes - something that was a perfect gift for a new bride with very limited cooking skills. Over the years I've gone back to that notebook time and again for simple, filling home cooked goodness. So recently, when a friend asked if I had a breakfast casserole recipe that would be good for a teacher appreciation breakfast, I said Why yes, yes I do. She reported back to me a few weeks later that, of the three breakfasts she's made dishes for, this one was the first that ranked an actual thank you note! So here it is folks, just in time for Mother's Day. (Did I mention that it is also SUPER easy to put together?)

Brunch Casserole
1lb sausage
1 (8oz) can refrigerator crescent dinner rolls
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (I use whatever shredded cheese I have on hand, including Mexican 4 blend, and I use as much as looks good to me!)
4 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup milk
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper

Cook sausage in skillet until brown and crumbly: drain well. (I have cooked the sausage the night before and just stored overnight in a ziplock - works great and is a real time saver in the morning.) Line the bottom of a buttered 9 x 13 inch baking dish with crescent rolls, sealing perforations. Sprinkle with sausage and cheese. In a separate bowl, beat eggs with milk and seasonings. Pour over sausage & cheese. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes until set. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting into squares.

Medicine Recall

My mom sent this to me today, it looks like it is for Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Zrytec are part of the recall…I hope this helps you to know if any of your medications are effected by the recall.

Free Movies in Sundance Square

http://sundancesquare.com/NewsletterArticle.aspx?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=insider_052010&showpop=0&id=50&aid=163

Once a month, I receive the Sundance Square e-Newsletter. Today's mentioned the 4th Annual (wow- can't believe it's been that many years already) free Movie night...outside, of course. It's the "inside the city" feeling of being at a drive-in, I suppose. The link above will lead you to the article about the movies. It also lists which movies are playing this year.

Hope you can make it!

Recall on McNeil Products (Tylenol, Motrin, etc)

Hi Mommas. Just wanted to post info on the product recall of some McNeil products, including name brand Tylenol and Motrin, Benadryl, and Zyrtec. Check the items in your medicine cabinets against the list posted on the McNeil site. I had three of the four items on hand, and all of mine are on the recall list.

Labels = Easy to find

So, I went through and added a label to all of the posts on this blog. I hope you don't mind. I just know that when I am searching for say, a good recipe, it is easier if I can just pull up all the recipes at once. That way when we have tons of posts on here, we can recall our information better. So, add your own label or use the ones that I have started.

Have fun.

Also, since I am writing a post now, I'll go ahead and add that using a label maker is a lot of fun. I recently labeled my craft area drawers and now, I can find everything. So, organizing and labeling really does cut down on time. Here's to organization.

Safe foods

There are certain foods that I buy organic, and others that I can't because of budgetary restraints (ie. 1 pound of green beans that cost over $5, yikes). But I wanted to pass along this list to those of you who might find it interesting and like "cheat sheets," much like I do for helping you remember stuff.

So, I recently received an email from one of my friends sharing with me the Environmental Working Group (EWG's) Shoppers Guide to foods that have been tested and shown to have higher pesticide levels. So to help consumers lower their risks, they have come up with this shoppers guide to make it easy to select less pesticide-contaminated non-organic foods, and to alert you to the ones that you should buy organic.

I have also heard that fruits and vegetables with thin skins are more susceptible (ie. strawberries, apples) and thicker skinned (avocados, citrus) are not. Check out foodnews.org for more info.

Here is the list:

This comes from this link, http://www.foodnews.org/sneak/EWG-shoppers-guide.pdf

Off to the races, perhaps?

Fellow mommas, when you were growing up, did your family ever have a bit of an oddball night out? In my house, Friday night was family night (even through high school!) and we usually did all the normal things you would expect - go to dinner, go to the movies, rent a movie, wander around bookstores, game night, whatever. But every once in a while, as a family, we'd head off to the races - the horse races. I remember sitting trackside on a cool spring night with not only my family, but my aunts, uncles and cousins as well. It is actually one of my most enduring 'family night' memories. We were all munching on dollar hotdogs and drinking dollar sodas and hoping our horse would be the one to win! So, mommas, when I heard the radio promo for dollar day this Saturday at Lone Star Park, I thought I would post about it here. Maybe your families can make some fun memories too!

According to the website, there will be 11 live horse races (if you aren't comfortable with betting you don't have to) and, "
Fans are invited to enjoy $1 admission, Lone Star Today programs, hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks and draft beer while watching exciting stakes races." In addition to free parking, the site also mentions that, "most apron seating, closest to the racing action, is free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis." The gates open at 11:30am and the first race starts around 1:30.

Now some of you moms may be wondering if this is really a fun thing to do. While this momma hasn't been to Lone Star Park, I have, over the course of my life, been to dollar days at other tracks. I always found it to be a great time and, if betting isn't your thing, you can still pick a horse to root for! The thrill of seeing "your" horse win is lots of fun. It may be an activity that is a bit suited to older children who will "get" what is going on.

If you and your family decide to check it out will you let us know how it went?

  • 1 pound strawberries
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons fruit preserves, any flavor

Cinnamon Chips (you can also purchase Cinnamon Chips and skip this step)

  • 10 (10 inch) flour tortillas
  • butter flavored cooking spray
  • 2 cups cinnamon sugar

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix kiwis, apples, raspberries, strawberries, white sugar, brown sugar and fruit preserves. Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 15 minutes.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  3. Coat one side of each flour tortilla with butter flavored cooking spray. Cut into wedges and arrange in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Sprinkle wedges with desired amount of cinnamon sugar. Spray again with cooking spray.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven 8 to 10 minutes. Repeat with any remaining tortilla wedges. Allow to cool approximately 15 minutes. Serve with chilled fruit mixture.

Strawberries!

I stopped by Walmart to get diapers this afternoon...(the Walmart store brand (Parent's Choice) is only $13.00 for 82 diapers, they work are soft and an extra bonus...they are simple and white, no Sesame Street characters at all!)...
All that to say, I perused the fruit section beause I had a hankering for grapes and was in search of grapes at a reasonable price, I not only found grapes for $1.14/lb but even better strawberries for $.99 a box!!!! Much to my delight I purchased six boxes (some to enjoy and eat and others for a baby shower that I am helping to host).
Just wanted to share the wealth...there's nothing quite like strawberries when it is nice outside!
Be Blessed!
Happy Friday!

Easy Peach Cobbler

About a year ago my mother-in-law gave me a super easy peach cobbler recipe that her mother-in-law had given her. It really is very easy, and best of all, most of the ingredients are things you'll already have on hand.

One stick margarine or butter
2 tsp. baking powder
pinch of salt
3/4 cup milk
1 cup of flour
1 cup of sugar
3-4 cups of fruit (drained) - 1 large can of peaches is perfect!

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Melt butter in a large glass casserole in oven. In another bowl, mix together all the other ingredients (except the fruit.) Mix well. Pour batter over melted butter. DO NOT STIR. Pour drained fruit into this mixture. DO NOT STIR. Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

My M-I-L notes that she always uses a large Pyrex mixing bowl to make the dish, but that a clear glass casserole or any other oven safe dish would work just as well.

You can also try other fruits in the cobbler. For example, I made one today (see the picture below) using blackberries and strawberries.

Enjoy!

Free Interactive Menu Planner

I got this from a Gerber Foods mailer. By no means will our child be the Gerber poster child (unless they want to sponsor us - lol), but it is very simple to use for ideas. It takes about 15 seconds to set up a profile (child's first name only, birthday, and no email or contact information requested).

Fun date night

I started searching on one of the previous sites posted and found this cute date night idea. I think we'll try it Friday when the in-laws keep our son!

Groupon

Have you heard of Groupon? It's been around for awhile in other cities, but just kicked off this week in Fort Worth. Here's how it works:
  1. Each day, they'll send you an email with a local deal of the day.
  2. You can choose to buy the Groupon, but you only get it if enough people participate that day…collective buying power, they call it. If not enough people sign up, the deal is canceled and you won't be charged.
  3. Each deal lasts 24 hours (although you don't have to use your Groupon that day).
Today's deal comes from FaceLogic Spa and features a $39 facial and microdermabrasion treatment (a $128 value), but I just checked recent deals for Dallas (since it's so new in FW) and they've featured restaurants, golf courses, salons, and garden centers, among others.

I've only received two days of deals and don't know if I'll buy anything yet, but I look forward to what's going to pop up each day and hope to score some irresistable restaurant deals. We'll see!

A Quote…

“Home is a place where we welcome each family member with a sense of belonging. Home is a place where we are free to bring the fullness of our womanhood to bear in every sphere of our life. A woman’s place is in the heart- the heart of her husband, the heart of her children and the heart of her home. Home is a refuge we create for every family member.  Homemaking is a call to express fully our personhood and thereby enable every member of the family to understand his or her dignity and worth. I am the queen of my realm. I am the heart of my home.”

Super Easy Chocolate Cake

A friend of mine gave me this recipe, I can't take any credit for it. The recipe is super easy and delicious. My husband and I think it may be one of the better chocolate cakes we have ever had, not the best...but right up there.

It would be perfect for a summer picnic or Bible study treat, I added powdered sugar and strawberries to the top to make it a little more festive looking.

Enjoy!

1 box yellow cake mix

1 small box of instant chocolate pudding

8 oz. sour cream

3/4 cup oil

3 eggs

6 oz. chocolate chips

1. fold all ingredients together

2. grease Bundt cake pan

3. pour batter into Bundt cake pan

4. bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes (mine took 50 minutes, but it may be my oven)

For Example...

I just came across this blog in my google reader and feel like I need to share, how cool are some of the ideas that this mom has? All because strawberries were on sale!

http://www.flythroughourwindow.com/

Strawberries + Kids = SUMMER!!!!
-su

Crazy Idea?

Who knows if this crazy idea for a blog will work...only time will tell, I guess!

There have been so many times when I have...

-Been perusing through stores around town and discovered a great deal and felt the need to shout it from the roof tops so that other friends/families could "cash in"/save some money

-Heard friends talking about sales that they have stumbled upon...leaving me wishing that I had had the opportunity to "cash in"

-Wanted to share a recipe successes so others can enjoy too!

-Wanted to ask which sippy cups don't leak

-Wanted to share a "crafting" idea

-Wanted to suggest books...(Sally Clarkson's Mission of Motherhood is fantastic!) & ask for book suggestions

-Wanted to know what fun and free (or inexpensive) activities there are to do around Fort Worth as a family

-The list goes on and on...

So I thought it would be fun to create a place where we all can share our different ideas and experiences from motherhood.

So here's to chattering!
